Woodgate Awarded City Grant for Thomasville Road Pocket Park
After almost two years of planning, Woodgate has won a grant from the City of Tallahassee to establish a pocket park near the Thomasville Road Front Island. The pocket park, consisting of a metal picnic table, chairs and benches and a “doggie poop station,” should be completed in time to host the Woodgate Annual Meeting and Chili Supper this fall.
Woodgate Neighborhood Association Treasurer Diana Bixler received this from Theodus Baker, City of Tallahassee Neighborhood Services Coordinator: “We are pleased to inform you that Woodgate Neighborhood Association’s Vibrant Neighborhoods Grant Program application for the Woodgate Pocket Park Project has been approved.”
Under the grant terms, the City will reimburse WNA $2,500. The WNA will provide a match of $1,250, mainly through in-kind contributions from the WNA Board and neighborhood residents. The pocket park will be located at the north corner of Woodgate Way and Thomasville Road. This is the only property in our subdivision owned by the neighborhood which can be used as a gathering place.
Woodgate residents regularly walk their pets or themselves on the Woodgate Way sidewalk. The park’s benches will provide a resting spot. The city and county are developing a walking and jogging trail along Thomasville Road and folks on that trail will utilize the pocket park too.
The park may be expanded later to include a water fountain and additional shrubs and trees.
This area will become a place where we can rest, relax and enjoy the outdoors. We can look forward to events in the park like the chili supper and our holiday lanterns gathering.
